This year we have a small grant to increase advertising/promotion and bring more farmers to the festival- so we are including a mini-farmers market and a free farm tour to everyone who'd like to visit the fabulous Chipping Twig Farm not far from the festival.
Chipping Twig is located near the Washington Soldiers Home and is home to Kevin and Crystal who have owned this farm for a few years. They recently opened a farm stand that operates on the honor system.
Kevin has had a passion for growing since he was a teen and has finally realized his dream of farming while raising nut and fruit trees, berries, row crops, flowers, bees, chickens and more- and doing it in a sustainable manner.
The shuttle to the farm will be located in the parking lot at the South park in Orting- you ride for free!
The tour is from 10 to 3 pm, so get to the festival early enough to do the tour and return to have more fun at the festival.
The Pumpkin Pals Parade is returning once again and parents are encouraged to register their kids for this event. Kids dress up for this parade (no scary costumes, please) and can win a prize. Be sure to check the schedule for event times so you don't miss out on anything. (website: tacomaevents.com under Pumpkin Fest)
The Giant Pumpkin Growers Association is participating this year, with a member bringing a winner from the State Fair!
This is a great photo opportunity for you. How many seeds are in the giant pumpkin- can you guess? Will find out when the pumpkin is eventually opened.
Fun fact: This Giant pumpkin may be entered in the Giant Pumpkin Regatta in Tualatin, Oregon if it lasts long enough. There, Giant pumpkins are turned into boats and paddled through a race course on the water. There are a series of races that they take the pumpkins through. (He's willing to count the seeds that he recovers from this pumpkin if we do a guessing contest).
-The Point Defiance Pirates will visit Pumpkin Fest to take pictures with you and help you enjoy the day.
-Dancing Scarecrows will be performing as will a number of live bands on two stages at the festival this year.
Look for the "Horse Drawn Cinderella Carriage" at the Pumpkin Fest- it's a great photo op for folks and a way to make a dream come true!
Classic Car show, Food, Vendors, and a whole lot more- be sure to mark this date on your calendar- we hope to see you there!
